Warning Signs

Trafficking is often hidden in plain sight. No single sign confirms it, but these patterns are worth paying attention to.

  • Appears disconnected from family, friends, or community, or a child suddenly stops attending school

  • Shows a sudden or dramatic change in behavior

  • Seems fearful, anxious, or submissive around a certain person

  • Doesn't have control of their own ID, passport, or travel documents

  • Isn't free to come and go, or someone else always speaks for them

  • Shows signs of physical abuse, malnourishment, or exhaustion

  • Lacks personal belongings or a stable place to live

  • Appears coached on what to say when asked questions

If you notice several of these signs together, trust your instincts and reach out. Call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733.
